Under the bombastic subtitle "The European Digital Music Revolution" a new web community is just born, Younison:
"Younison is the first European Pressure Platform that gives Artists, DJ/producers, Managers and Organizers in the Music Industry a voice to speak up with and to actually change the way our business will be organised in the future."

In the FAQ there's an explanation for the subtitle:

The balls of Brussels - the Atomium - were built for Expo '58 and exist 50 years. The architect of the project Waterkeyn decided to protect 'his' concept by putting his rights to the collecting society Sabam. So, everytime someone wants to put a photo of the Atomium on his website, he has to pay about 90,00 euro/month. One estimates that the income of all payments to Sabam ammounts to about 30.000 euro/year, and this goes to the heir of the late architect (he died in 2005) till + 70 years after his death = 2075. Because this year is the anniversary of Expo '58, the organisation of the Belgian heritage in Mechelen planned to do actions whereby people would send their old pictures of those old days, and to put them on the web, blogs, ... Because of the Sabam rule, the organisation did a playful call ("cultural guerilla") for 100 people to help 'photoshop' away the balls on all the photographs.
Sabam replied that this year is an exception, and people can publish for 1 year the images, as long it's in a non commercial way.

Now i wonder, who ever paid this building, and who owned it then (and now). I mean, if this building is paid by taxes, i should think that the belgian state owns this building and all it's plans, and that the architect made it as an employee of the same state, and has no right to put a copyright on plans made for his employer. Can anyone help me sort this out?

"Just thought it might be nice to mention this, because I've noticed the rate of netlabel adoption is quite rapidly increasing. Some brief stats:

- 850 netlabels, in total
- increasing by around 25 netlabels per month.

- 11,990 separate 'items', that is singles, EPs, or albums
- increasing by 5/10 items per day (!)

Not bad at all! Obviously, the upload system for the Archive is not the MOST userfriendly in the world, but the structure of netlabels (collections, items, download counts) works really well for microlabels. So kudos to everyone at the Archive for getting everything running smoothly."

netlabelism.net is very very proud to announce its next musical achievement. The mixtape netlabel OP3N sent netlabelism.net an invitation to make a mixtape, and this resulted in "Netwaves: mixed emotions". This mix is not a showcase of DJ skills in the first place, but rather an anthology of musical pearls hidden in the vast amount of tunes on the internet. The songs are alternated by field recordings, taped in Louvain, a little university town in Belgium. Besides being the hometown of netlabelism.net, it is also famous for its beer Stella Artois.

The mix was compiled by embe, with a little help from TransistorLab.

Sound Copyright says: "Copyright in sound recordings currently lasts for 50 years. Yet the recording industry continues to demand that this term be extended. ... But term extension would be an injustice to European musicians and musical culture, and may harm our economy.
... Copyright is a bargain. In exchange for their investment in creating and distributing sound recordings to the public, copyright holders are granted a limited monopoly during which are allowed to control the use of those recordings. This includes the right to pursue anyone who uses their recordings without permission. But when this time is up, these works join Goethe, Hugo and Shakespeare in the proper place for all human culture – the public domain.
... Seminal soul, reggae, and rock and roll recordings will soon be freed from legal restrictions, allowing anyone (including the performers themselves and their heirs) to preserve, reissue, and remix them.
... Major record labels want to keep control of sound recordings well beyond the current 50 year term so that they can continue to make marginal profits from the few recordings that are still commercially viable half a century after they were laid down.
...

If you agree that copyright term on sound recordings should not be extended past 50 years, please, sign this petition today. Together, we can defeat copyright term extension."

Sound Copyright is an initiative by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the Open Rights Group (ORG).

I must have missed this important one somehow: Phlow magazine has released a "Best of Netlabels" vol. 1 in january already, and now there's a vol. 2 peeping at their website.

The goal is to bring every month an anthology of the best tunes around the world. The title of the series is "Their Finest Hour". We are very happy with this initiative, because there's tons and tons of music on the internet and netlabels, and we welcome every effort to filter and organise this stuff. Thanks Phlow! The releases are made with much care, love and respect. There's streaming, download per tune, zip-file and a nice cover.

Sabam digs Creative Commons

Update (and now it's becoming more clear):
In a reaction Sabam states that there is nothing new under the sun: members always have been able to reject some parts of their rights management. New is the fact that one can reject the online management by Sabam, i.e. one can manage his music online, both downloads and streaming. The best way to do this is with a Creative Commons license.
Note: if you reject this service, it is applied to the whole of works, not for individual works. But this does not mean that you have to put your whole catalogue on the web.
Conclusion: i interprete this that you can release a CD under Sabam and let them earn moneyfor you, and in the mean time you can also put this release online with a Creative Commons license. This is a big step forward, but some questions remain like: what about a non-profit party where i play the downloaded songs, instead of the CD, do i have to pay or not?

Old version:
According to the popular portal for popmusicians "Poppunt" the Belgian collecting society Sabam will tolerate that her members use the Creative Commons license for their creative products. What I understand is that a member needs to revoke his Sabam membership for a certain part of his copyright management. This applies to the whole of artist's work. The artist can for example choose to manage his music online, and let his work free in pubs, shops, dj-sets, movies. The rest of the article is too confusing for me, so any help/comment is welcome.

No info at all at the Sabam website (!?), but there is one contact: Dirk Vervenne, the guy from our debate "Is er muziek na Sabam?".

At least, without being pretentious, I think we can be proud of ourselves to have stimulated and influenced the discussion on this high level, thanks to our debates "Is er muziek na Sabam?" & "Studiedag: auteursrechten en de kleine organisator" and reporting about CC in Belgium.

Scorpio-DJ contest

The winner of the Scorpio-DJ contest in cooperation with 'het Depot' and 'Kulturama' has been announced. The jury chose the mix of pq(prime) with his own minimal and progressive house tracks as the winning mix.
Normally pq(prime) would have performed live as part of ‘Netwaves live‘ at the Kulturama festival in Leuven (Belgium), but unfortunately he had other musical obligations. Instead of the winner, we welcome other two participants of the contest: Cpt. Interceptor and Pleksi & Kronoz.

As promised, you can find the release on the famous mix-netlabel Sonic Walker. We would like to thank Sonic a lot for the hosting and releasing.

A great breakthrough in the music business model: music band "Tone" under contract with the Danish collecting society "KODA" releases an album with a CC license.
CC blogs: "Today marks the release of "Small Arm of Sea", the debut album by female indietronica singer, songwriter and producer Tone (Sofie Nielsen). While the album itself is unique in its style and substance, seamlessly combining abstract electronic composition techniques with a clear pop sensibility, it is equally as intriguing in terms of distribution.
Small Arm of Sea is available both in stores (on both combined CD/DVD w/ visuals or vinyl) and online (for free, non-DRM download), with physical copies containing the text “Copy this album for your friends, please!”."
"If people enjoy what I do, they can support me by buying the record in the stores. This will give them the video part as well. But otherwise I hope they will download the music for free just to check out what I do," Sofie Nielsen smiles.

Radio Scorpio organiseert in samenwerking met het Depot voor Kulturama een DJ-Contest.

Goed nieuws voor aanstormend DJ-talent. Radio Scorpio (Leuven, 106 FM) organiseert op 9 februari van 22u tot 01u een DJ-wedstrijd. Dan sturen we een selectie van de inzendingen de Leuvense ether in. In het bijzonder zijn we op zoek naar liefhebbers van up&down electronica en varianten. Op het einde van de uitzending maakt onze jury van gerenommeerde Scorpio-dj's dé winnaar bekend.

En of er wat te winnen valt? We hebben maar één prijs, maar al zeggen we het zelf, die is niet mis. Op zaterdag 16 februari organiseert Het Depot n.a.v. het jaarlijkse Kulturamafestival een dj Ed Banger Label Night in de Silo. De grote zaal van de Silo wordt onder handen genomen door Mr. Oizo, labelbaas Busy P himself en Uffie & Feadz.

De winnaar van onze wedstrijd mag deze hoogdag van de electronische muziek op gang trekken in de "Small Room" van diezelfde Silo, alwaar de dj's van Netwaves Live hun ding doen. Van een vuurdoop gesproken… Én niet te vergeten: de winnende set wordt uitgebracht op het bekende netlabel Sonic Walker.

Wat je verder nog moet weten? Enkel songs die zijn uitgebracht onder Creative Commons mogen in de mixer worden gedraaid. Qué? Creative Commons is een licentie die ervoor zorgt dat het auteursrecht bewaard blijft, maar dat het werk toch vrij mag gekopieerd en verspreid worden. Anders gezegd: sabam-vrije stuff. Op onze site vind je onder 'DJ-contest' voorbeelden te over. Je bezorgt je mix ten laatste op 6 februari aan Radio Scorpio, Naamsestraat 96, 3000 Leuven of je stuurt ons de online link door (mail@radioscorpio.com). Hierbij voeg je dan ook verplicht je playlist (naam artiest, titel nummer, label, link online). En dan is het afwachten.

troubles @ IA

Last three months everybody experienced problems when one tried to visit the webpages and tried to down/upload stuff, and there were also issues with the counter. You can read more about the troubles and the solution here, also expect these problems to last till half february:

"1) we've been switching to a "should be faster" http backend server on some of our machines. that's making updating download counts a bit trickier until we finish (soon!) the parsing code.

2) we had a lot of server upgrades we had to do unscheduled, right around thanksgiving.

3) we are upgrading our "fleet" of servers to a new OS. that has caused some stability issues as we've had to sort out some issues only seen under heavy load.

4) we've *massively* upp-ed our bandwidth. so suddenly some servers are serving out "hot" items so fast they are swamping servers temporarily until we can get to it. this plus the faster http server in 40 of our most recent nodes mean some items are ruining the fun for the rest for periods of time.

5) holidays -- we are shortstaffed. it's a holiday weekend and i'm writing this from boston! (nuff said ;-) "

Still, we thank the IA for being here and serving as mothership for a lot of netlabels!

Just discovered that one of my all-time favourites has a video.
Don't forget to listen to the full-length version of the song. This song was one of the reasons that convinced me that you have to take netlabels serious. The bands' website seems to be off air, and the netlabel Realaudio seems to be defunct. Hm, a pity!

Nature Publishing Group goes Creative Commons: " In the continuing drive to make papers as accessible as possible, NPG is now introducing a 'creative commons' licence for the reuse of genome papers. The licence allows non-commercial publishers, however they might be defined, to reuse the pdf and html versions of the paper. In particular, users are free to copy, distribute, transmit and adapt the contribution, provided this is for non-commercial purposes, subject to the same or similar licence conditions and due attribution."
