How to start a netlabel?

The famous Italian blogger Eldino had some time ago a very interesting blog called "Come aprire una netlabel" (How to start a netlabel), but unfortunately it was in Italian. Now, another blogger, Barefoot Melt (Envisioning Toad), has made an attempt to translate the manual in English (with a little help from Google Translate) and made some thoughts about it. Feel free to submit comments on this manual.

Simon C. published some stats on IA:

"Just thought it might be nice to mention this, because I've noticed the rate of netlabel adoption is quite rapidly increasing. Some brief stats:

- 850 netlabels, in total
- increasing by around 25 netlabels per month.

- 11,990 separate 'items', that is singles, EPs, or albums
- increasing by 5/10 items per day (!)

Not bad at all! Obviously, the upload system for the Archive is not the MOST userfriendly in the world, but the structure of netlabels (collections, items, download counts) works really well for microlabels. So kudos to everyone at the Archive for getting everything running smoothly."

'We Share Music' is a free music service for netlabel owners to upload releases. One can follow new releases via rss-feeds, and there is a top 100 of the most downloaded releases. 'We Share Music' is beta. I've put their link under links>blogs>listen.

Sven Swift Free Music Charts 2007

Sven Swift runs the established CDr- and Netlabel 12rec.net and acts as a Netaudio DJ from time to time. He writes enliven reviews about free music at RUBored.org, Phlow-Magazine.com and Earlabs.org. Swift produces electro-acoustic ambient-music on analogue synthesizers and is responsible for most of the delightful artworks at 12rec. Netlabel. From nine to five, he's working as a graduate student in a biochemical laboratory. He is married with a beautiful girl named Anne.

"More than 20 netlables from many different countries present more than 30 netaudio artists on netaudioberlin, the 2007 netaudio gathering in Berlin. 5-7 oct.: three days full of music, workshops, discussions, netlabel fair and - of course - nice people!"

Een waarheid als een koe! Deze boude uitspraak komt van Marco Kalnenek, netlabelbaas van WM Recordings in een interview (feb. 2006) met Wobly. Het toeval wil dat wij in volgende Netwaves (episode 34) een interview met een groep van dit netlabel hebben, nl. Happy Elf. Trouwens, die Wobly is bovendien een interessante site: "Een *e-zine/log voor en over Nederlandse en Belgische muziek. Niet geënt op één bepaalde stijl.". En met de nodige aandacht voor Creative Commons, zoals de besprekingen van de Simuze CD ‘Share This Vibe’ en de 'CC Nederland CD'. Of wat dacht je van D’r Sjaak? Een eche aonraojeuhr!

RIP Zirkulardynamik

We interviewed the crazy (in German: "völlig verrückte") members of the band in our Netwaves New-wave episode a couple of months ago. May odd god bless them.
