Petition: stop the extension of 50 year in copyright

Sound Copyright says: "Copyright in sound recordings currently lasts for 50 years. Yet the recording industry continues to demand that this term be extended. ... But term extension would be an injustice to European musicians and musical culture, and may harm our economy.
... Copyright is a bargain. In exchange for their investment in creating and distributing sound recordings to the public, copyright holders are granted a limited monopoly during which are allowed to control the use of those recordings. This includes the right to pursue anyone who uses their recordings without permission. But when this time is up, these works join Goethe, Hugo and Shakespeare in the proper place for all human culture – the public domain.
... Seminal soul, reggae, and rock and roll recordings will soon be freed from legal restrictions, allowing anyone (including the performers themselves and their heirs) to preserve, reissue, and remix them.
... Major record labels want to keep control of sound recordings well beyond the current 50 year term so that they can continue to make marginal profits from the few recordings that are still commercially viable half a century after they were laid down.
...

If you agree that copyright term on sound recordings should not be extended past 50 years, please, sign this petition today. Together, we can defeat copyright term extension."

Sound Copyright is an initiative by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the Open Rights Group (ORG).

"The idea that the same copyright regime should apply to movie studios and kids who photocopy comics is preposterous."
Conclusion: "We need to stop shoe-horning cultural use into the little carve-outs in copyright, such as fair dealing and fair use. Instead we need to establish a new copyright regime that reflects the age-old normative consensus about what's fair and what isn't at the small-scale, hand-to-hand end of copying, display, performance and adaptation."
Media Me

proof of commercial CC

A great breakthrough in the music business model: music band "Tone" under contract with the Danish collecting society "KODA" releases an album with a CC license.
CC blogs: "Today marks the release of "Small Arm of Sea", the debut album by female indietronica singer, songwriter and producer Tone (Sofie Nielsen). While the album itself is unique in its style and substance, seamlessly combining abstract electronic composition techniques with a clear pop sensibility, it is equally as intriguing in terms of distribution.
Small Arm of Sea is available both in stores (on both combined CD/DVD w/ visuals or vinyl) and online (for free, non-DRM download), with physical copies containing the text “Copy this album for your friends, please!”."
"If people enjoy what I do, they can support me by buying the record in the stores. This will give them the video part as well. But otherwise I hope they will download the music for free just to check out what I do," Sofie Nielsen smiles.

Programma:
14:00
- Joris Deene (Univ. Gent) (o.v.): Juridische uitleg over auteursrechten
- Marco Raaphorst (muzikant, producent, creative commons): de filosofie achter auteursrechten.

Pauze met muzikaal intermezzo door Logos

15:00
- Jan Hautekiet over zijn ervaringen met Sabam
- Willy Verkoelen: Toogenblik (klein podium in Haren/Brussel) en SABAM
- Lieven Scheire (Neveneffecten) over onterechte inningen.
- Bart De Wilde: de beginnende kunstenaar

Pauze met muzikaal intermezzo door Logos

16:00
burn station

from their website:
"Burn Station is a mobile copying station which - as it travels through suburban spaces - supports the free distribution music and audio. It is software as well as a local network. But above all Burn Station is a social event which congregates people together to listen, select and copy net label and net radio audio files with a Copyleft Licence. Burn Station is an open source and a non-commercial project involving the new means of free networked distribution. It is based on the Burn Station software which was developed by Platoniq and Rama as a 100% Free software. Burn Station aims to establish links between the media space and the physical space of the city."

Copyrights and Copywrongs

quote: "In Copyrights and Copywrongs, Siva Vaidhyanathan tracks the history of American copyright law through the 20th century, from Mark Twain's vehement exhortations for "thick" copyright protection, to recent lawsuits regarding sampling in rap music and the "digital moment," exemplified by the rise of Napster and MP3 technology. He argues persuasively that in its current punitive, highly restrictive form, American copyright law hinders cultural production, thereby contributing to the poverty of civic culture."
You can find the book in pdf here.
